What is the 6T40?
The 6T40 family is GM's six-speed automatic for transverse engines, built from the late 2000s for compact and mid-size cars and crossovers. The number reflects torque capacity: the 6T30 suits small engines, while the 6T45 and 6T50 take 2.4 L-class and turbo engines. Many internal parts are shared across the family.
The control module is bolted to the valve body inside the case, forming one unit GM calls the TEHCM, and a replacement must be programmed to the vehicle. The other well-known weak point is the 3-5-reverse clutch wave plate on earlier units, which can break and cause loss of reverse, 3rd and 5th gear.

01Does a replacement TEHCM need programming?
Yes. The TEHCM must be programmed to the vehicle with GM tooling (GDS2 / SPS) or an equivalent tool before the car shifts correctly. Send us the VIN and the number on the old unit and we confirm the right version.
02Are 6T40 and 6T45 parts interchangeable?
Many internal parts are shared across the 6T30 to 6T50 family, but clutch packs, control modules and some drums differ by version and model year. Send the number on your old part and we confirm the match.
03What fluid does the 6T40 use?
GM DEXRON VI. Change the fluid after any valve body, TEHCM or clutch repair.
